Boise State, Freedom Youth Foundation inspire Idaho foster youth through sports

BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Idaho foster children will have the opportunity to meet and play games with Boise State student-athletes on the iconic blue turf at Albertsons Stadium during the Fostering Future Broncos event on November 4.

The event, hosted by the Department of Health and Welfare, Boise State Athletics, BroncoLife, and Freedom Youth Foundation, aims to celebrate Idaho’s foster youth and families while emphasizing the positive impact of sports, teamwork, and mentorship.

“We’re excited to once again offer this unforgettable experience for foster youth and families from across Idaho,” said Laura Denner, DHW Family and Community Partnerships administrator. “The BLUE turf at Albertsons Stadium is a symbol of Idaho pride, and this event gives children in foster care a chance to create memories and connect with inspiring role models.”

The evening will include games, activities, and opportunities to interact with Boise State student-athletes from various sports, including football, softball, gymnastics, golf, beach volleyball, and soccer. The goal is to create a fun, supportive environment that fosters confidence, connection, and community support.

“Our student-athletes look forward to this event each year,” said Sara Whiles, Boise State associate athletic director, BroncoLife and Varsity B. “It’s an opportunity to share the joy of being a Bronco and to celebrate Idaho’s amazing foster families.”

Shane Hanson, founder and CEO of the Freedom Youth Foundation, highlighted the role of sports in building self-esteem and life skills for youth in foster care. “Sports empower kids by giving them teamwork, confidence, and a sense of belonging,” he said. “Meeting college student-athletes who’ve worked hard to reach their goals can show what’s possible.”

Families attending the event will enjoy autograph sessions, photos on the blue turf, and ample time to play and connect. Children are encouraged to wear athletic shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. For more information, please get in touch with Laura Denner at Laura.Denner@dhw.idaho.gov.
